It was always said that during times of holiday fun and family fun during those times. There is always the chance that something can happen that would make people believe that there was more to life than science.
The med bay and lab was the domain of Ada. She knew every square millimeter of the space and wished for upgrades to make her job much easier. Those upgrades would be obtained but as it was she worked with what she had at hand. The Genarians were in the process of outfitting her med bay and lab with all the equipment she would ever need and the training she had received from them already would compliment this new equipment quite nicely. When she entered she would be greeted by the low hum of her older equipment. She had already received the specifications of the new equipment and the technical data. It would suit her nicely. The one thing that was out of place was the skeletal regenerator that she had used earlier that day on Freya's broken arm and the hairline fractures that Sakuya had suffered as a result of their fight. She hadn't placed it there at all. She was organized and everything had its place. It being there wasn't something that happened for Ada. If she thought about it she had replaced it earlier in the day after its use. She was the only one who used the med bay and lab and that meant someone else had been in there.
A sound from the other corner of the med bay. It sounded like a laser scalpel hitting the floor. Why would it fall off a prepped tray?
A scraping sound from behind her near the door. Was someone in there?

Ada was busy doing her thing in the med bay and lab. This was the perfect place to get away from the Christmas carols. She was still trying to figure out how to test the Cataphract Armor prototype when she had such a limited population of wearers to choose from. Ada herself tried it on but could only wear it for ten minutes before the weight became unbearable. That discomfort was tough to handle in comfortable non-combat conditions. She could only imagine what it was like in real combat when taking off the armor was a luxury that was not available.
Out of everyone on board the Dark Echoes, only Alex, Felix, and Jacob could wear the heavy armor for more than a few minutes at a time. Alex was blessed with her late mother's strength. Felix had been trained almost from birth to wear armor. Jacob was an adult with military training and strength in his favor. She would need to ask one of them to try the prototype, but that would have to wait.
Some things were out of place. This was not right. Only a few people had regular access to the med lab and Ada was one of them. She heard a metallic tool hit the floor, most likely the laser scalpel she had sterilized, cleaned, and put on a tray. How did that happen?
She heard scraping sound from behind her. It was coming from close to the door. Ada immediately retrieved her pistol from a locker in the med bay and went to investigate. It was a bog-standard pistol, but it was good enough to do the job. Ada leaned off to one side, took a deep breath, and opened the door.

The door slid open soundlessly and there was nothing there. The sounds had abated for the moment but the feeling of being alone would not leave her. That feeling alone seemed to flee with her opening the door but there were still those questions that would nag at her scientific and ordered mind. The one that concepted armor and upgraded weapons. That mind would tell her that she hadn’t put the scalpel on the table fully and many other perfectly normal reason for it falling.
There was another part of the mind, one she had read about in those psychology books. It was how the human mind tried to rationalize things that it didn’t understand. She knew it was a hold over from ancient beings. That still didn’t make it easier to take it in.
The rustling came from near the bio-bed and seemed to vary in pitch and tone.

The bio-bed was acting strangely. It was emitting noise that varied in tone and pitch. Wait, it was not the bio-bed that was making the noise. It was something rustling near it that was the source.
This was really strange, but there had to be an explanation. A rational explanation. Ada shut the door and went to investigate the noise. She still kept her pistol handy because she never knew when she needed to fight.
Ada slowly and carefully walked over to the bio-bed. She stood at the foot of it and took a careful peek around the object, trying not to expose too much of her head. She was not sure what she was up against.

The noise seemed to stop the moment she approached and was about to get a good vantage on it. It was gone but it was followed by a giggle. That was then footsteps that went away from the bed. As the receded from the bed a shadow could be seen for the briefest of s moment.
The chatter of cabinets being opened in the OR was the next noise. It nearly felt like a child exploring or being willfully disobedient.

Ada was beginning to get worried. She had examined two areas and was unable to find the source of the noise. Now it was coming from the Operating Room and it sounded like a child giggling. Ada's face showed concern. She was not hearing anything from the omnipresent station AI.
Taking a deep breath, Ada slowly and carefully made her way to the Operating Room. The cacophony of cabinets being opened filled the room and was filtering into the med bay. What was going on here? Ada took cover behind the doorway and carefully peeked into the OR.

That’s when Ada would see it. A little girl going through the OR looking at items and then dropping them on the ground as if they were uninteresting or had no value. She didn’t seem to notice or be bothered by the fact that someone was coming up behind her. The fact was that if Ada truly noticed the shadow she was casting wasn’t exactly right. After a minute more she turned around and smiled at Ada.
“Hello! I thought I was alone here. You must be the resident healer. I have some questions for you. They are general questions but questions. The first one being why does a healer need a weapon?”
She smiled at her as she held a laser scalpel casually.

Ada was seriously creeped out. How did a child get tin here without triggering any alarms or a notice from the A.I.? This was weird. "Um, yes. I'm the resident doctor. If you have questions, there's a good chance that I have answers." Ada said to the strange girl. She did not like the fact that the youth was holding a laser scalpel and acting so calmly. Maybe the scientist/doctor should put away her own weapon. Ada did just that.
"I carry a weapon because sometimes I go into dangerous places and need to be able to defend myself." Ada calmly explained to the youth. Just what exactly was going on here?

The child seemed to be placated by the weapon being put away and she put the laser scalpel back where she had found it. She didn’t need that crude weapon in her mind.
“Ah yes they are called doctors. I will have to remember that.”
It was like she was ticking off a mental list of things. When Ada said she had answers a smile grew on the child’s face. It was an almost knowing smile.
“I like answers. They provide clarity in situations where none can be gained by observation.”
She nodded to the explanation that she needed the weapon because of where she went but was perplexed, why? This young woman here was a Child of Mercury. She should be able to henshin and become the Soldier of Mercury known as Sailor Mercury. That was odd.
“You can’t henshin yet? That’s very odd because most females of your linage can transform by this age. I’m very confused but I suppose that means I need to get out more. What do you like to do for fun?”
She seemed very natural like this situation occurred very often for her.

"Fun?" Ada repeated. Fun? What was that? There was not a whole lot of that on board the Dark Echoes... unless one counted the occasional drinking spree. Or the other "extracurricular" activities going on behind closed doors.
The small girl wanted an answer, so Ada would give her one.
"Fun? Me, I stick to the tech lab or medical bay and do everything I can to keep the station going and its inhabitants alive. The station is held together with duct tape and chicken wire and requires a lot of maintenance. Upgrades to the technology and electronics require a lot of time and effort. Most of the time I have to work hard just to keep what we have going." Ada told the small child. That reminded her... she really needed to check the electrical systems of the med bay. That would have to wait, though.

The child seemed to accept her not mentioning the transformation. It was like she had never thought about it or even knew she could take the form her mother once took. She decided that she would move on from it. The explanation of how she worked tirelessly to keep the station from falling apart was what she considered fun. That was indeed a punishment only her father would have thought up for someone. Everything is broken and any actions you take to fix it won’t be beneficial at all. You will tool for eternity fixing everything over and over again until you go utterly mad. This woman didn’t deserve that. She had witnessed enough in her life.
“You toil endlessly at making things work and yet you don’t get to rest. Doesn’t anyone else help you or is it on your shoulders alone?”
She would have to come back and make sure things remained fixed so that the denizens of this place could rest easy. Her father would tell her that meddling in others affairs wasn’t her business even if she considered it a nice thing. Her mother would tell her that she was being generous when another wouldn’t have done a thing for a person in her situation. Her brother would smile and get her something sweet for doing a good deed. Her sister though would just look at her and ruffle her shirt hair.
“I’m sure that things will improve with your station so the tape and wire can be used for other ventures. Now how about a tour of your home.”
She waited and then smiled nicely at the Mercurian young woman.
“Please?”

"I do most of it myself because it is easier that way. I am the most knowledgeable person on the station when it comes to the technology." Ada explained to the mysterious young girl. Only Captain Marconi knew more, but he had the advantage of being alive a few decades longer than Ada. He was most likely around when the technology was invented. Her late mother certainly was.
"It is hard work keeping everything running, but it has to be done. I may need to find an assistant, but the others have their own responsibilities." Ada added further. When she heard that the youth wanted a tour of her home, the Princess of Mercury paused. What did that mean? "When you say a tour of my home, did you mean the station or my room?" Ada cautiously asked the youth.

The young woman nodded to her as she told her about the mundane activities that this being went about to keep them from all dying. She found that it was a bit tedious and that technology was a tad confusing to her because they didn't have technology where she came from and maybe they needed it. She knew about hard work and what it took to do things what she believed Ada would call the old fashioned way. She didn't know if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Either way she would have to ask more questions about this technology during the tour.
"I would first like to know about your home and then you can tell me about this technology."
The tour would be nice and she would like one.
"First your home and then maybe you could show me your room. I would like to see that. I want to know how the Daughter of the Senshi of Mercury lives. I have always liked Queen Mizuno. She was very level headed and calm. I don't meet many that are like her until you. Please show me your home. I would like to see it."
She held out her hand as a child would but when Ada took it she would get a feeling this child was not quite a child.

"Well, the space station has the technology needed to keep us alive. It generates food, water, and even air. That is why I have to work to keep it running at all times." Ada explained to the youth. She explained as much as she could without delving into classified information, which would land her in hot water with the captain. Ada did not need to end up there, so the more prudent idea would be to guide the stranger to her room, where no sensitive material was located.
"We even have gravity, which is important because floating around all the time can get tiring." Ada explained further. Another issue came up. How was she supposed to get the girl to her room without anyone seeing them and bringing the captain down on her head like a ton of bricks?
"You said you wanted to see my room, right?" Ada asked the youth. She hoped that the girl would not be disappointed when the small space station quarters did not resemble the grandeur of Mariner Castle. All there was to Ada's room was a desk loaded with circuitry for small projects for both the station and more personal projects. "OK. I will show you to my room. Just do not expect palatial accommodations." Ada expressed a willingness to take the youth on a tour of her room, such as it was.

The girl seemed to accept that but wondered why she seemed a bit cagey about showing her around the station. She didn't betray it with her body language but her speech seemed a bit guarded. She just nodded and decided to give her an idea of why a tour would be ok. She didn't really want to have this woman nervous but it seemed as if she was going to show her where she slept.
"If you must then I should tell you that you don't have to show me where you sleep only. I know you want to but show me other places. After all they can't see me. Only you can see me. I know that may be hard to believe but take me where like and you don't have to worry about them seeing me."
She took Ada's hand and waited for her to lead the way.
